What is YANGA!?

YANGA! is a new general entertainment channel targeting Africa’s thriving diaspora, delivering a vibrant combination of programming genres across drama, comedy, music, kids to current affairs and news. YANGA! is the home of positive and inspirational stories to celebrate the cultural richness and pride of Africa and its people around the world.

Where can we watch YANGA! content?

YANGA! is available on SKY channel 186 and also available to view on Freesat channel 171. We are in active discussions with other cable and satellite providers and news on future distribution will follow in due course. YANGA! short-form content will be available online via YANGATV.com and YouTube (Yanga UK).

Are you OFCOM regulated?

Yes YANGA! is OFCOM regulated.

What are your broadcasting hours?

YANGA! broadcasts 15 hours a day from 09.00 to 12.00 GMT from Chiswick Park Studios, a cutting edge facility located in West London.

What does YANGA! mean?

"Yanga" means self-pride (in West African pidgin) and is an enthusiastic, positive, form of self-expression. Our content and brand will reflect "yanga" in its positioning and values bringing a taste of Africa’s pride and energy into the homes of its audience.

Who is your target audience?

YANGA! is for anyone who identifies with or has an interest in the confident, joyful and exuberant culture of Africa, regardless of gender or generation.

Our programming will primarily appeal to a core target community of 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation Africans. At its broadest reach, YANGA! will be ‘origin-agnostic’ – tapping into growing interest groups of popular African culture and lifestyle, from its music and comedy to lifestyle and current affairs. Our content will provide a clear bridge between the diaspora community and their homeland, in a positive and celebratory way.

Who owns YANGA!?

YANGA!'s parent company is Africa Media Works, a UK-registered media company. Africa Media Works will develop a portfolio of business interests, in the field of Media and Entertainment, and YANGA! is the company's first commercial venture.

Africa Media Works' mission is to create an African Media Hub in London, where content producers and broadcast professionals can harness the services, support and scale of a multi-faceted media operation. We aim to create a Centre of African Creative Excellence, where production facilities, media training, development and distribution of content come together to strengthen and ‘scale’ the volume and quality of African content around the world.

Our business will reflect the fresh, authentic and progressive picture of African media talent, and help counterbalance the often-negative perceptions presented in Western media of modern-day Africa.

What does YANGA! programming look like?

Regardless of gender or generation, YANGA! has content that will resonate, delivering a wide range of entertainment programming from kids, women's interests and current affairs, to comedy and drama. YANGA! also offers international news and business from an African viewpoint. This broad spectrum of content is formed through original commissions and acquired programming, appealing to different demographics within our target audience at different times of the day.

Will you hold full programme episodes online?

Not at the moment. Digital platforms are very important to us but at present it is our intention to hold carefully edited highlights of our shows online. As we grow, we are open to future opportunities.

How often will you review your content?

Content will be reviewed on a monthly, weekly and daily basis.

What does your schedule look like and where can we find it?

We do not currently hold our schedule online but you can find out what's on by viewing the Sky EPG (channel 293) and the Freesat LCN Channel 171.

Are there certain countries or regions on the continent which the channel will be more heavily focused?

As the largest group of the African diaspora in the UK, the channel will have a strong West African reference by virtue of the size of its population.

Will there be any acquired content for people from Francophone countries?

Quality content, across a variety of genres, will be considered from all parts of Africa, but our target language will remain English.
